he Grand Entrance Gate to the Temple is formed by wide portals from North Broad Street opening into a Norman porch. This area is built of Quincy granite into a projection of the front wall, as was often the practice in churches of the Norman period. The projection is deeper than usual, allowing for more elaboration and finish. The imposing doors of the Grand Entrance Gate are each seventeen feet high, seven feet wide and six inches thick. The doors are ornamented with beautiful Norman decorations in keeping with the porch.
long the inner steps of the Temple are two large bronze sphinxes. Beneath the Grand Staircase, which leads to the meeting place of the Grand Lodge, are the Seal of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, the Great Seal of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and a large plaque encircled with the four cardinal virtues-Temperance, Fortitude, Prudence and Justice.
